 Introduction

Our MicroX range of products consists of Main, Daughter and Frontend boards. The Main boards are single board computers(SBC) that have connectors for Daughter and Frontend boards. The Daughter and Frontend boards can for example be prototype boards, analog input boards, digital output boards, mp3 output boards, CAN fieldbus boards......
Seeing that all boards comply with the MicroX standard, any combination of boards can be plugged together.



 Programming

Seeing that the PIC chips on most of the Main Board are socketed, they can be programmed externally or in circuit. All Main Boards have a standard 8 pin ICSP (In Circuit Serial Programming) connector that is used to program the PIC chip in circuit.  Main Boards

These boards are normally Single Board Computers(SBC). They can have connectors for Daughter and Frontend boards. The Daughter board fits on top of the main board via 2 rows of 2x12 2.54mm connectors. The Frontend boards fits on to the front of the main board via 2 board edge connectors.  Frontend Boards
Frontend boards can be connected to Main (SBC) boards to add additional functionality. They have 2mm pin headers soldered horizontally onto them. They connect with the card edge connector on the Main board. There are a couple of ways to connect the Frontend board to the Main board:

-- Solderless --
Seeing that the Main board is 1.6mm thick, and the distance between the rows of the 2mm connector is 1.5mm, the connector fits tightly when mated. This connection method should only be used for prototyping, and is NOT a permanent connection!
-- Soldered --
To connect the two boards together permanently, the pins can be soldered onto the card edge connector of the Main board (In the same way as they are soldered onto the Frontend board).
-- Socketed --
A socket can be soldered onto the card edge connector of the Main Board, into which the pins of the Frontend board fits.

All new Frontend Boards have areas cut out on the board for the connector to fit into. By doing this there is no gap between the Main and Frontend board when mated! The image shows a Main (top green board) and Frontend (bottom beige board) plugged together.

 Daughter Boards

These boards have 2 rows of 2x12 2.54mm pin headers that fit into the female headers on the main board. The Standard size Main board normally has connectors for a Standard and Compact Daughter board. The Compact Main board only has a connector for a Compact Daughter board.

 Board Dimensions

There are 2 standard dimensions for all boards, standard and compact.

  • A Standard main board is 97mm wide and 54mm heigh. When a frontend board is plugged into it the total size is 97mm wide and 90mm heigh.
  • A Compact main board is 58mm wide and 54mm heigh. When a frontend board is plugged into it the total size is 58mm wide and 90mm heigh.
